It is true, we have two Community Bicycle Hubs installed in Austin and a third on its way!
Housed in a modified 20’ shipping container owned and managed by Ghisallo Cycling Initiative, the Hubs consist of a micro bike shop with an array of tools, stands, and parts for community members to use to repair their personal bicycles, as well as a bike fleet storage and management area. At Community First Village (read the blog post about that installation here), the bicycle area houses a lending library of bikes that residents can check out to use for transportation, while our recreation center-based Hubs have bicycles and safety gear available for instructor-led bicycle education programs.
The Gus Garcia Recreation Center installation enables expanded programming and adds support and more services for our ongoing youth programs at Dobie Middle School and Hart Elementary School. The Garcia Hub allows us to provide the Rundberg area community with these additional and continuing programs:
- Cycle Academy: Youth bicycle education opportunities [http://cycleacademy.org]
- Golden Rollers: Senior tricycle activities [http://goldenrollers.org]
- Free, ongoing bicycle mechanic clinics and training with access to bicycle tools, stands, and parts
- Instruction on safe riding, route mapping, and equipment usage to empower residents to safely and effectively use a bicycle for transportation and recreation
