Two Wheels of Awesome – Episode 20

Over 200 eager students learned safety and riding skills at the Lee Elementary Bike Rodeo. We partnered with Coach David Huff to bring our second school wide Bike Rodeo of the semester to the P.E. Class at Lee Elementary.

In our during school day Bike Rodeos the Ghisallo Cycling Initiative partners with the PE Coach and the school for these multi-day skills clinics. We have received a number of mini-grants from the City of Austin and the Michael & Susan Dell Community Collaborative for Child Health to provide these and collect data about outcomes of these activations for a select set of schools around Austin this year.

In the three days at Lee, 212 3rd through 6th graders practiced bike control, hand signaling, balancing and many other useful skills.

Bike Rodeos are designed to be accessible to riders of all levels. At Lee we sharpened the skills of advanced riders, provided basic safety information for intermediate riders and even taught a few beginner students how to ride for their first time!

The excitement at Lee Elementary didn’t stop at the end of the three-day Bike Rodeo! The skills clinic led straight into the start of an After-School Bike Club at the Elementary School. The Bike Club members will now continue master the skills learned during the Bike Rodeo as well as more advanced ones. We are always excited to expand our programming to reach new students in new settings and get more kids in Austin out riding safely!

Students are eager for the class to begin.
